Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They retain full power for nearly 10 years – the loss is just ~1% (in theory),
- Neodymium magnets remain extremely resistant to loss of magnetic properties caused by external interference,
- In other words, due to the aesthetic layer of gold, the element becomes visually attractive,
- They are known for high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which increases their power,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and are able to act (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in shaping and the capacity to modify to individual projects,
- Significant place in innovative solutions – they find application in HDD drives, electric motors, medical equipment, also other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in small dimensions, which makes them useful in small systems
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore when using outdoors, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Due to limitations in producing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. It is also worth noting that small components of these magnets can disrupt the diagnostic process medical in case of swallowing.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Magnetic strength at its maximum – what it depends on?
- with the application of a sheet made of special test steel, guaranteeing full magnetic saturation
- whose transverse dimension reaches at least 10 mm
- characterized by smoothness
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at temperature room level
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, gap) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content weaken the attraction effect.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which improves force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Temperature influence – hot environment reduces pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Precision electronics
Be aware: neodymium magnets produce a field that interferes with precision electronics. Keep a separation from your phone, device, and GPS.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or screen. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Physical harm
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Use thick gloves.
Do not underestimate power
Use magnets with awareness. Their powerful strength can shock even professionals. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
Pacemakers
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets disrupt electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or ask another person to handle the magnets.
Do not drill into magnets
Machining of NdFeB material poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Shattering risk
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, ejecting shards into the air. Wear goggles.
Demagnetization risk
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Do not give to children
Neodymium magnets are not intended for children. Eating several magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a direct threat to life and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Allergic reactions
It is widely known that nickel (the usual finish) is a potent allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, avoid direct skin contact or select encased magnets.
