Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (based on calculations),
- They are extremely resistant to demagnetization induced by external field influence,
- A magnet with a metallic gold surface is more attractive,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a powerful magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Possibility of detailed forming and optimizing to defined conditions,
- Universal use in advanced technology sectors – they are used in hard drives, brushless drives, advanced medical instruments, as well as other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in compact dimensions, which allows their use in compact constructions
Disadvantages
- They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Limited ability of creating threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - recommended is casing - mounting mechanism.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small components of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Holding force characteristics
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what affects it?
- on a block made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
- with a thickness no less than 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- at ambient temperature room level
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (rust, tape, gap) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they are weaker, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under parallel forces the holding force is lower. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Warning for heart patients
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
No play value
These products are not suitable for play. Accidental ingestion of several magnets can lead to them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a severe health hazard and requires urgent medical intervention.
Do not underestimate power
Handle magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can surprise even experienced users. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
Hand protection
Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Magnetic interference
GPS units and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Electronic devices
Powerful magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Stay away of at least 10 cm.
Do not overheat magnets
Do not overheat. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Dust explosion hazard
Dust created during grinding of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Allergy Warning
A percentage of the population have a hypersensitivity to nickel, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Extended handling may cause dermatitis. We suggest wear safety gloves.
Beware of splinters
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
