Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- Their magnetic field remains stable, and after around 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (according to research),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- In other words, due to the aesthetic finish of nickel, the element gains a professional look,
- Neodymium magnets deliver maximum magnetic induction on a small surface, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can function (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in forming and the ability to customize to unusual requirements,
- Huge importance in high-tech industry – they are used in mass storage devices, electric drive systems, advanced medical instruments, also other advanced devices.
- Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Disadvantages
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we recommend placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, small components of these devices are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- With mass production the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Pull force analysis
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- using a plate made of high-permeability steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- with a thickness of at least 10 mm
- with an ground touching surface
- under conditions of no distance (surface-to-surface)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- in stable room temperature
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Space between magnet and steel – every millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) diminishes the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds much less (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Material composition – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface finish – ideal contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, in contrast under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Dust is flammable
Machining of NdFeB material poses a fire hazard. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Life threat
Patients with a pacemaker must keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetism can stop the functioning of the life-saving device.
Do not overheat magnets
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose power when the temperature exceeds 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Choking Hazard
Neodymium magnets are not intended for children. Swallowing several magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a critical condition and requires urgent medical intervention.
Do not underestimate power
Handle magnets consciously. Their huge power can surprise even professionals. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
GPS and phone interference
A powerful magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of magnetometers in phones and GPS navigation. Do not bring magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Eye protection
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Crushing risk
Protect your hands. Two powerful magnets will join instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Nickel allergy
Allergy Notice: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If redness happens, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Safe distance
Intense magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, hard drives, and storage devices. Maintain a gap of at least 10 cm.
