Strengths as well as weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Pros
- Their power is durable, and after around ten years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They feature excellent resistance to magnetism drop as a result of external magnetic sources,
- In other words, due to the glossy surface of silver, the element is aesthetically pleasing,
- Neodymium magnets achieve maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Thanks to versatility in constructing and the capacity to modify to specific needs,
- Wide application in modern technologies – they serve a role in magnetic memories, electromotive mechanisms, medical devices, also modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in compact dimensions, which makes them useful in miniature devices
Weaknesses
- They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore when using outdoors, we suggest using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complex shapes in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic mount.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small components of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- With mass production the cost of neodymium magnets is a challenge,
Holding force characteristics
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what contributes to it?
- with the contact of a yoke made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- possessing a massiveness of minimum 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with an ground contact surface
- with total lack of distance (without impurities)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- at room temperature
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Air gap (betwixt the magnet and the metal), since even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Plate thickness – too thin sheet causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the flux to be lost to the other side.
- Material composition – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Base smoothness – the more even the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of force. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
Warnings
Respect the power
Before use, read the rules. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Be predictive.
Protect data
Do not bring magnets near a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Demagnetization risk
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet to high heat will ruin its magnetic structure and pulling force.
No play value
Adult use only. Small elements pose a choking risk, causing serious injuries. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Threat to navigation
Be aware: rare earth magnets produce a field that disrupts sensitive sensors. Keep a safe distance from your mobile, device, and GPS.
Beware of splinters
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, which means they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets will cause them cracking into shards.
Machining danger
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Health Danger
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Hand protection
Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so great that it can result in blood blisters, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Skin irritation risks
A percentage of the population suffer from a sensitization to nickel, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Extended handling can result in a rash. We suggest use safety gloves.
