How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force.   • Neodymium magnets lose their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore while using outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture

Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnetwhat affects it?

Information about lifting capacity was determined for optimal configuration, taking into account:
  • with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
  • with a cross-section of at least 10 mm
  • with an ground touching surface
  • with direct contact (without coatings)
  • for force acting at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
  • at standard ambient temperature

Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors

In practice, the actual holding force depends on several key aspects, ranked from most significant:
  • Distance (betwixt the magnet and the metal), as even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a reduction in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
  • Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
  • Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
  • Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Cast iron may attract less.
  • Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the plate, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
  • Temperature influence – high temperature reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.

Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the holding force.

Combustion hazard

Powder generated during cutting of magnets is flammable. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.

Heat sensitivity

Standard neodymium magnets (grade N) lose power when the temperature exceeds 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.

Life threat

Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields affect medical devices. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.

Handle with care. Rare earth magnets attract from a long distance and connect with massive power, often faster than you can react.
