Frequently asked questions

Which rod should I choose for fine contamination?
For particles below 0.5 mm — a Ø32 mm rod in grade N52, with surface induction of about 10,000 Gs. A Ø25 rod in grade N42 gives about 6,500 Gs and is chosen for contamination above 1 mm: bolts, washers, pieces of wire.
Which rod pitch should I choose?
The narrow pitch, 40 mm centre to centre, for fine free-flowing fractions — it gives denser coverage of the cross-section. The wide pitch, 50 mm, for granulates and for damp, greasy or sticky materials, where a narrow pitch risks the material bridging above the rods.
Why does efficiency drop after a few weeks of operation?
Almost always because the separator has not been cleaned. The layer of captured particles shields the field, and further particles settle on that layer rather than on the rod surface, where the gradient is far stronger. The magnets themselves do not weaken at that rate.

This separator is tasked with cleaning the product (coal, aggregate, recycling) from steel contaminants. It can also be mounted in a gravity channel down which raw material falls. The main goal is to protect crushing machines from destruction and ensure product purity.
Ferrite separators are characterized by a deep, penetrating magnetic field. They work well in initial separation in recycling and mining. Neodymiums are unrivaled in catching fine filings, wires, and small screws. The decision should be made based on the type of separated material and cleanliness requirements.
The separator housing is high-quality stainless steel, welded by TIG method. Thanks to this, the device is waterproof, dustproof, and very durable. It can be safely used in contact with loose food (flour, sugar, grain).
Cleaning a plate separator (static) is done manually. Just drop attracted elements (screws, wires) outside the conveyor belt area. Cleaning frequency depends on the amount of contaminants in the product - the more metal, the more often you need to clean.
We can produce a magnetic block perfectly matched to your installation and requirements. We adjust length, width, and mounting hole arrangement (eyes, threads). Contact us to receive a free quote and technical drawing.

Strengths as well as weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.

Advantages

Apart from their strong holding force, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • Their strength is durable, and after around ten years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
  • They retain their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
  • A magnet with a metallic gold surface has an effective appearance,
  • The surface of neodymium magnets generates a intense magnetic field – this is one of their assets,
  • Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling operation at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
  • In view of the possibility of flexible forming and adaptation to specialized requirements, neodymium magnets can be created in a variety of forms and dimensions, which increases their versatility,
  • Significant place in modern technologies – they are commonly used in HDD drives, electric motors, medical devices, as well as complex engineering applications.
  • Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications

Cons

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:
  • They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in special housings. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
  • Neodymium magnets decrease their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
  • They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
  • Due to limitations in producing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic mount.
  • Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small components of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
  • Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications

Holding force characteristics

Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditionswhat affects it?

Magnet power was defined for the most favorable conditions, assuming:
  • using a plate made of low-carbon steel, acting as a magnetic yoke
  • with a thickness no less than 10 mm
  • with an ground touching surface
  • under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
  • for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
  • at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius

Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors

Effective lifting capacity is influenced by working environment parameters, mainly (from priority):
  • Distance – the presence of foreign body (rust, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
  • Force direction – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
  • Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the attraction effect.
  • Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the surface, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
  • Heat – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they are weaker, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).

Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.

Precautions when working with NdFeB magnets
Mechanical processing

Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.

Skin irritation risks

A percentage of the population have a sensitization to nickel, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Extended handling might lead to dermatitis. We strongly advise wear protective gloves.

Life threat

Individuals with a ICD have to maintain an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can stop the functioning of the life-saving device.

Power loss in heat

Standard neodymium magnets (grade N) lose magnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. Damage is permanent.

Safe operation

Handle with care. Neodymium magnets act from a distance and connect with huge force, often faster than you can move away.

Do not give to children

NdFeB magnets are not toys. Eating several magnets can lead to them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a direct threat to life and requires urgent medical intervention.

Risk of cracking

Beware of splinters. Magnets can explode upon violent connection, launching sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.

GPS and phone interference

An intense magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of magnetometers in smartphones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets close to a smartphone to avoid damaging the sensors.

Bodily injuries

Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.

Safe distance

Very strong magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Keep a distance of min. 10 cm.
