Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Capacity is selected to securely hold a handgun but allow for quick draw. For long guns (rifle, shotgun), we recommend using two holders (one for the barrel/handguard, the other for the stock/chamber).

Using a magnet in a car is technically possible, but remember the legal aspects of access to the weapon and its concealment. We recommend complying with the Weapons and Ammunition Act and common sense.

Cons

What to avoid - cons of neodymium magnets and ways of using them
  • Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
  • When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
  • Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, when using outdoors
  • Due to limitations in producing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using cover - magnetic mount.
  • Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
  • Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications

Lifting parameters

Maximum magnetic pulling forcewhat affects it?

The force parameter is a theoretical maximum value executed under the following configuration:
  • on a block made of structural steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
  • with a thickness minimum 10 mm
  • with an polished touching surface
  • with zero gap (without paint)
  • under axial force vector (90-degree angle)
  • in temp. approx. 20°C

Determinants of lifting force in real conditions

It is worth knowing that the application force may be lower depending on the following factors, in order of importance:
  • Space between magnet and steel – every millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) diminishes the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
  • Force direction – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
  • Plate thickness – too thin steel does not accept the full field, causing part of the flux to be wasted into the air.
  • Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Cast iron may generate lower lifting capacity.
  • Surface quality – the more even the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Roughness acts like micro-gaps.
  • Thermal factor – hot environment reduces pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.

Holding force was checked on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, in contrast under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.

Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Machining danger

Machining of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.

Metal Allergy

A percentage of the population have a sensitization to Ni, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to an allergic reaction. We suggest use safety gloves.

Physical harm

Big blocks can smash fingers instantly. Never place your hand betwixt two strong magnets.

Magnets are brittle

Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are fragile like glass. Clashing of two magnets leads to them cracking into small pieces.

Electronic hazard

Very strong magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Keep a distance of at least 10 cm.

Warning for heart patients

Individuals with a pacemaker must keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the life-saving device.

Operating temperature

Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. This process is irreversible.

Powerful field

Use magnets with awareness. Their powerful strength can shock even professionals. Stay alert and do not underestimate their power.

No play value

NdFeB magnets are not suitable for play. Swallowing multiple magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a critical condition and necessitates immediate surgery.

GPS Danger

GPS units and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
