Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They have stable power, and over around ten years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They are extremely resistant to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- The use of an elegant layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, making them more effective,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to modularity in forming and the capacity to adapt to complex applications,
- Universal use in advanced technology sectors – they are commonly used in mass storage devices, drive modules, diagnostic systems, also multitasking production systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Disadvantages
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mount.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small components of these products can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- With mass production the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Pull force analysis
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what it depends on?
- on a plate made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic field
- possessing a massiveness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- without any air gap between the magnet and steel
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Distance – existence of any layer (paint, tape, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Chemical composition of the base – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Higher carbon content lower magnetic properties and holding force.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Operating temperature – neodymium magnets have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they lose power, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Skin irritation risks
It is widely known that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a strong allergen. If you have an allergy, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands or select versions in plastic housing.
Respect the power
Handle magnets with awareness. Their powerful strength can surprise even experienced users. Plan your moves and respect their power.
Heat sensitivity
Watch the temperature. Heating the magnet to high heat will ruin its magnetic structure and strength.
Electronic devices
Avoid bringing magnets near a wallet, computer, or TV. The magnetic field can irreversibly ruin these devices and erase data from cards.
Do not give to children
These products are not intended for children. Swallowing multiple magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a direct threat to life and necessitates immediate surgery.
Risk of cracking
NdFeB magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are prone to chipping. Clashing of two magnets leads to them cracking into small pieces.
Impact on smartphones
Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that interferes with precision electronics. Keep a separation from your mobile, device, and GPS.
Medical implants
For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields affect electronics. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Bone fractures
Protect your hands. Two powerful magnets will snap together immediately with a force of massive weight, crushing anything in their path. Be careful!
Dust is flammable
Powder created during machining of magnets is combustible. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
