Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose power, even after around 10 years – the decrease in lifting capacity is only ~1% (according to tests),
- They have excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties due to external magnetic sources,
- Thanks to the glossy finish, the layer of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver-plated gives an modern appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a maximum magnetic field – this is one of their assets,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Possibility of individual forming as well as modifying to precise applications,
- Key role in modern technologies – they serve a role in mass storage devices, motor assemblies, medical equipment, as well as multitasking production systems.
- Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Limitations
- They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic holder.
- Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Holding force characteristics
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what it depends on?
- with the use of a yoke made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose transverse dimension reaches at least 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
- under perpendicular force vector (90-degree angle)
- at temperature room level
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Distance (betwixt the magnet and the metal), since even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or debris).
- Angle of force application – maximum parameter is reached only during pulling at a 90° angle. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the plate is usually several times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Steel thickness – too thin plate does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be wasted to the other side.
- Material composition – different alloys attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Operating temperature – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they are weaker, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Combustion hazard
Powder generated during machining of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Danger to pacemakers
For implant holders: Powerful magnets affect electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
GPS and phone interference
Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
Powerful field
Before starting, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
Sensitization to coating
Certain individuals have a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to a rash. We strongly advise use safety gloves.
Bodily injuries
Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so great that it can cause blood blisters, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, laptop, or TV. The magnetic field can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
No play value
These products are not intended for children. Swallowing several magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which constitutes a severe health hazard and necessitates immediate surgery.
Heat sensitivity
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you require operation above 80°C, inquire about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Eye protection
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
