Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.
Pros
- They do not lose power, even over nearly 10 years – the decrease in power is only ~1% (according to tests),
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely resistant to demagnetization caused by external magnetic fields,
- Thanks to the smooth finish, the layer of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver gives an elegant appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a concentrated magnetic field – this is a key feature,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for functioning at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of accurate modeling as well as optimizing to concrete requirements,
- Key role in electronics industry – they are commonly used in mass storage devices, electric drive systems, medical equipment, also multitasking production systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a strong case, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- Neodymium magnets lose their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mount.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Pull force analysis
Highest magnetic holding force – what it depends on?
- with the use of a yoke made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- with a thickness of at least 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Gap between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) drastically reduces the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds much less (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet limits the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the attraction effect.
- Surface finish – ideal contact is possible only on smooth steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, weakening the magnet.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Handling guide
Exercise caution. Neodymium magnets attract from a long distance and snap with huge force, often faster than you can move away.
Maximum temperature
Regular neodymium magnets (grade N) lose power when the temperature surpasses 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Pacemakers
Health Alert: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Magnets are brittle
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, which means they are prone to chipping. Clashing of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.
Safe distance
Device Safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Threat to navigation
Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Do not give to children
Only for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, causing severe trauma. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Hand protection
Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so great that it can result in blood blisters, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Allergic reactions
Studies show that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a strong allergen. If you have an allergy, avoid touching magnets with bare hands or select coated magnets.
Machining danger
Drilling and cutting of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
