Advantages as well as disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- Their magnetic field is maintained, and after around 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- Magnets perfectly resist against demagnetization caused by ambient magnetic noise,
- The use of an refined layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to present itself better,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a unique magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Thanks to versatility in forming and the ability to adapt to complex applications,
- Universal use in innovative solutions – they are used in mass storage devices, electric motors, diagnostic systems, as well as other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in small dimensions, which allows their use in small systems
Disadvantages
- They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- Neodymium magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- We recommend casing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these magnets are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Highest magnetic holding force – what it depends on?
- using a plate made of low-carbon steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
- with a plane perfectly flat
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Base massiveness – insufficiently thick sheet causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the flux to be escaped into the air.
- Plate material – mild steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures lower magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Thermal factor – high temperature weakens magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Holding force was checked on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Do not overheat magnets
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet to high heat will destroy its magnetic structure and pulling force.
Bone fractures
Large magnets can crush fingers instantly. Do not place your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
Eye protection
Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
GPS Danger
GPS units and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Cards and drives
Avoid bringing magnets close to a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and erase data from cards.
Respect the power
Be careful. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and snap with huge force, often quicker than you can react.
Dust is flammable
Powder produced during machining of magnets is self-igniting. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Medical interference
People with a pacemaker should keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetic field can disrupt the functioning of the life-saving device.
Avoid contact if allergic
Certain individuals experience a contact allergy to Ni, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Extended handling can result in a rash. It is best to use safety gloves.
Product not for children
NdFeB magnets are not toys. Swallowing multiple magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a direct threat to life and requires urgent medical intervention.
