Other proposals
Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Pros
- They virtually do not lose power, because even after ten years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (based on calculations),
- Magnets very well resist against demagnetization caused by foreign field sources,
- In other words, due to the aesthetic surface of gold, the element gains visual value,
- Magnets possess exceptionally strong magnetic induction on the surface,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can function (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Possibility of custom machining as well as adapting to atypical conditions,
- Fundamental importance in innovative solutions – they are used in data components, electric motors, advanced medical instruments, as well as other advanced devices.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore during using outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in producing threads and complex shapes in magnets, we recommend using casing - magnetic mechanism.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Holding force characteristics
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what contributes to it?
- using a sheet made of high-permeability steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- characterized by even structure
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- in neutral thermal conditions
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by veneer or unevenness) drastically reduces the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Element thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal limits the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Hardened steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Surface finish – full contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of force. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity was determined using a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under vertically applied force, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the load capacity.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Magnetic media
Data protection: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Implant safety
Individuals with a ICD have to keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetic field can disrupt the functioning of the implant.
Dust explosion hazard
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Power loss in heat
Keep cool. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to temperature. If you require operation above 80°C, look for HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Sensitization to coating
A percentage of the population experience a contact allergy to nickel, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching may cause a rash. We recommend use protective gloves.
GPS and phone interference
Note: neodymium magnets generate a field that confuses sensitive sensors. Keep a separation from your mobile, device, and navigation systems.
Physical harm
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
No play value
Absolutely keep magnets away from children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets connecting inside the body are life-threatening.
Immense force
Be careful. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and connect with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Fragile material
Beware of splinters. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
