How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Expect a fraction of the catalogue figure in real conditions, and choose the mounting point and coating with that in mind.

Limitations

Characteristics of disadvantages of neodymium magnets and ways of using them
  • They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
  • When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
  • They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we suggest using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
  • Limited possibility of producing nuts in the magnet and complex forms - recommended is cover - magnetic holder.
  • Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, tiny parts of these devices can disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.

Maximum magnetic pulling forcewhat affects it?

The load parameter shown refers to the peak performance, recorded under laboratory conditions, meaning:
  • on a plate made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
  • possessing a thickness of minimum 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
  • with an ideally smooth contact surface
  • under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
  • during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
  • in stable room temperature

Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice

Real force is influenced by specific conditions, mainly (from priority):
  • Distance – existence of any layer (rust, dirt, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
  • Direction of force – maximum parameter is available only during pulling at a 90° angle. The shear force of the magnet along the plate is standardly many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
  • Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of generating force.
  • Chemical composition of the base – mild steel gives the best results. Alloy admixtures decrease magnetic permeability and holding force.
  • Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which increases force. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
  • Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of force. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.

Holding force was checked on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, however under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.

Choking Hazard

Material brittleness

Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, which means they are fragile like glass. Impact of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.

Medical interference

Medical warning: Strong magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.

Physical harm

Watch your fingers. Two powerful magnets will snap together immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!

Protect data

Do not bring magnets near a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.

Allergic reactions

Nickel alert: The nickel-copper-nickel coating contains nickel. If skin irritation appears, cease working with magnets and wear gloves.

Permanent damage

Regular neodymium magnets (grade N) undergo demagnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. Damage is permanent.

Handling rules
