Strengths as well as weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They retain magnetic properties for nearly 10 years – the loss is just ~1% (according to analyses),
- Neodymium magnets are distinguished by extremely resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external magnetic fields,
- Thanks to the shiny finish, the surface of nickel, gold, or silver gives an aesthetic appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the working part of the magnet is strong,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to modularity in forming and the capacity to customize to specific needs,
- Key role in electronics industry – they are commonly used in magnetic memories, motor assemblies, advanced medical instruments, and other advanced devices.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using cover - magnetic mechanism.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small elements of these products can disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is relatively high,
Holding force characteristics
Highest magnetic holding force – what contributes to it?
- using a sheet made of mild steel, serving as a ideal flux conductor
- possessing a massiveness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an polished touching surface
- without any clearance between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- at room temperature
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Distance (between the magnet and the metal), since even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a reduction in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or debris).
- Direction of force – maximum parameter is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The shear force of the magnet along the surface is usually several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Material composition – different alloys reacts the same. High carbon content weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface finish – full contact is obtained only on polished steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was performed on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the holding force.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Serious injuries
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, crushing anything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Dust explosion hazard
Combustion risk: Neodymium dust is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
Health Danger
Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields affect medical devices. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or request help to work with the magnets.
Conscious usage
Handle magnets consciously. Their immense force can surprise even professionals. Stay alert and do not underestimate their force.
Allergy Warning
It is widely known that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands and select encased magnets.
Magnetic interference
GPS units and mobile phones are highly susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the internal compass in your phone.
Fragile material
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are very brittle. Clashing of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Product not for children
These products are not toys. Swallowing several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a direct threat to life and requires immediate surgery.
Do not overheat magnets
Keep cool. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to heat. If you need operation above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Protect data
Device Safety: Neodymium magnets can damage payment cards and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, mechanical watches).
