Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose magnetism, even during nearly ten years – the drop in lifting capacity is only ~1% (based on measurements),
- They maintain their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- In other words, due to the reflective finish of silver, the element becomes visually attractive,
- Magnets are characterized by maximum magnetic induction on the working surface,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Thanks to flexibility in shaping and the capacity to adapt to individual projects,
- Key role in modern technologies – they are commonly used in data components, electric motors, medical devices, as well as multitasking production systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a strong case, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- Neodymium magnets lose their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- We recommend a housing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in realizing nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what contributes to it?
- on a block made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic flux
- possessing a massiveness of min. 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with a plane perfectly flat
- under conditions of no distance (surface-to-surface)
- under axial force direction (90-degree angle)
- at room temperature
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (paint, dirt, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may attract less.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Temperature influence – hot environment reduces magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Holding force was checked on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Mechanical processing
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Physical harm
Large magnets can crush fingers instantly. Under no circumstances put your hand between two strong magnets.
Phone sensors
GPS units and mobile phones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Caution required
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets act from a long distance and connect with huge force, often quicker than you can move away.
Medical implants
Life threat: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Sensitization to coating
Certain individuals have a contact allergy to nickel, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Extended handling can result in a rash. We recommend wear protective gloves.
Keep away from children
Always keep magnets out of reach of children. Ingestion danger is significant, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are tragic.
Eye protection
Despite the nickel coating, the material is delicate and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Demagnetization risk
Control the heat. Heating the magnet to high heat will destroy its properties and pulling force.
Safe distance
Very strong magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of min. 10 cm.
