Strengths as well as weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after 10 years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (based on calculations),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- The use of an elegant layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, making them more effective,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Considering the option of flexible forming and customization to individualized solutions, magnetic components can be produced in a variety of geometric configurations, which amplifies use scope,
- Huge importance in modern technologies – they are commonly used in HDD drives, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, also other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in tiny dimensions, which enables their usage in miniature devices
Weaknesses
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using cover - magnetic mount.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small elements of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- using a plate made of low-carbon steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- without any clearance between the magnet and steel
- under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (paint, dirt, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Load vector – highest force is obtained only during perpendicular pulling. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the surface is standardly several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Base massiveness – insufficiently thick sheet does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be escaped to the other side.
- Plate material – mild steel attracts best. Higher carbon content lower magnetic permeability and holding force.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the surface, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
H&S for magnets
Permanent damage
Do not overheat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Caution required
Before use, read the rules. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Magnetic interference
A powerful magnetic field disrupts the operation of compasses in smartphones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets close to a smartphone to avoid damaging the sensors.
Fragile material
Protect your eyes. Magnets can explode upon violent connection, launching sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Serious injuries
Large magnets can break fingers in a fraction of a second. Never place your hand between two attracting surfaces.
Metal Allergy
Certain individuals have a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact can result in dermatitis. It is best to wear safety gloves.
Product not for children
Only for adults. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, leading to intestinal necrosis. Store away from children and animals.
Pacemakers
Health Alert: Neodymium magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Dust explosion hazard
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets in home conditions as this may cause fire.
Protect data
Powerful magnetic fields can corrupt files on payment cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Stay away of at least 10 cm.
