Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Benefits
- They have constant strength, and over nearly ten years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They possess excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties when exposed to opposing magnetic fields,
- By applying a lustrous coating of silver, the element has an professional look,
- Magnets exhibit maximum magnetic induction on the outer side,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Thanks to the potential of precise forming and adaptation to individualized solutions, magnetic components can be produced in a broad palette of geometric configurations, which increases their versatility,
- Versatile presence in future technologies – they serve a role in HDD drives, electric motors, advanced medical instruments, and industrial machines.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, when using outdoors
- We suggest cover - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Additionally, tiny parts of these products can be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what it depends on?
- on a plate made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic flux
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- under conditions of no distance (surface-to-surface)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- in stable room temperature
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Air gap (betwixt the magnet and the metal), since even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content worsen the attraction effect.
- Surface quality – the more even the plate, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Temperature influence – hot environment reduces pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the load capacity.
H&S for magnets
Beware of splinters
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Finger safety
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Thermal limits
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Medical implants
Life threat: Strong magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
This is not a toy
Strictly store magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets connecting inside the body are life-threatening.
Avoid contact if allergic
Warning for allergy sufferers: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If redness occurs, cease working with magnets and wear gloves.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetic field can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Flammability
Mechanical processing of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Powerful field
Handle with care. Neodymium magnets attract from a distance and connect with massive power, often quicker than you can react.
Impact on smartphones
Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that disrupts precision electronics. Keep a separation from your mobile, device, and navigation systems.
