Other proposals
Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets.
Advantages
- They do not lose strength, even after around ten years – the decrease in power is only ~1% (theoretically),
- Neodymium magnets prove to be exceptionally resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external field sources,
- The use of an aesthetic finish of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to be more visually attractive,
- They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which affects their effectiveness,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are capable of working (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of exact machining and adapting to concrete requirements,
- Significant place in modern technologies – they serve a role in mass storage devices, brushless drives, precision medical tools, also modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in small dimensions, which enables their usage in miniature devices
Limitations
- They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mount.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what it depends on?
- using a base made of high-permeability steel, acting as a magnetic yoke
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- at standard ambient temperature
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by veneer or unevenness) diminishes the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel type – mild steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures decrease magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they are weaker, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was tested on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Phone sensors
Note: rare earth magnets produce a field that interferes with sensitive sensors. Keep a safe distance from your mobile, device, and navigation systems.
Combustion hazard
Dust created during grinding of magnets is self-igniting. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Safe distance
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetic field can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Thermal limits
Watch the temperature. Exposing the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will permanently weaken its properties and strength.
Swallowing risk
NdFeB magnets are not intended for children. Eating several magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates immediate surgery.
Risk of cracking
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Powerful field
Use magnets with awareness. Their huge power can surprise even experienced users. Stay alert and do not underestimate their force.
Nickel coating and allergies
Certain individuals suffer from a sensitization to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Frequent touching may cause dermatitis. We suggest wear safety gloves.
Hand protection
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will join instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Health Danger
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets disrupt electronics. Keep at least 30 cm distance or request help to work with the magnets.
