Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the performance loss is only ~1% (based on calculations),
- They show high resistance to demagnetization induced by presence of other magnetic fields,
- The use of an shiny finish of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a powerful magnetic field – this is a key feature,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and are able to act (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to flexibility in constructing and the capacity to modify to individual projects,
- Huge importance in modern industrial fields – they find application in data components, electric drive systems, advanced medical instruments, also modern systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Limitations
- They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using cover - magnetic mount.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- Due to complex production process, their price is higher than average,
Pull force analysis
Magnetic strength at its maximum – what it depends on?
- with the application of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- possessing a massiveness of min. 10 mm to avoid saturation
- characterized by smoothness
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Air gap (between the magnet and the metal), since even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or debris).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet exhibits much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Chemical composition of the base – mild steel gives the best results. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the surface, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, however under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
ICD Warning
For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields disrupt electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Magnets are brittle
Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon violent connection, launching sharp fragments into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Physical harm
Large magnets can smash fingers instantly. Do not put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Conscious usage
Handle with care. Neodymium magnets act from a long distance and connect with massive power, often quicker than you can move away.
Heat warning
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, look for special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Fire warning
Machining of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
GPS and phone interference
GPS units and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a strong magnet can permanently damage the internal compass in your phone.
Adults only
Adult use only. Small elements pose a choking risk, causing intestinal necrosis. Keep out of reach of kids and pets.
Protect data
Intense magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Allergy Warning
Medical facts indicate that nickel (the usual finish) is a strong allergen. If you have an allergy, prevent direct skin contact and select encased magnets.
