Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (in laboratory conditions),
- They have excellent resistance to magnetic field loss due to opposing magnetic fields,
- A magnet with a shiny silver surface has better aesthetics,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a concentrated magnetic field – this is a key feature,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Thanks to the option of free shaping and customization to individualized solutions, magnetic components can be produced in a variety of shapes and sizes, which makes them more universal,
- Universal use in innovative solutions – they serve a role in computer drives, drive modules, precision medical tools, also multitasking production systems.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Weaknesses
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in producing nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mount.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, tiny parts of these devices are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- With large orders the cost of neodymium magnets is a challenge,
Lifting parameters
Highest magnetic holding force – what it depends on?
- using a base made of low-carbon steel, serving as a magnetic yoke
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with an polished contact surface
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Gap (between the magnet and the metal), as even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet limits the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – the best choice is pure iron steel. Cast iron may have worse magnetic properties.
- Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the plate, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Temperature influence – high temperature weakens pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity was measured with the use of a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the holding force is lower. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Impact on smartphones
An intense magnetic field negatively affects the operation of compasses in phones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
Nickel allergy
Allergy Notice: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating consists of nickel. If an allergic reaction happens, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Powerful field
Use magnets with awareness. Their immense force can surprise even experienced users. Stay alert and respect their power.
Protective goggles
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Product not for children
These products are not toys. Eating a few magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a critical condition and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Crushing force
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Power loss in heat
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Combustion hazard
Mechanical processing of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Electronic hazard
Avoid bringing magnets close to a wallet, laptop, or TV. The magnetic field can destroy these devices and erase data from cards.
Pacemakers
Medical warning: Strong magnets can turn off pacemakers and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
