Strengths and weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the performance loss is only ~1% (according to literature),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- In other words, due to the glossy finish of silver, the element gains visual value,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a contact point, which allows for strong attraction,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are capable of working (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Thanks to the potential of accurate molding and customization to specialized needs, NdFeB magnets can be manufactured in a wide range of geometric configurations, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Universal use in future technologies – they are used in magnetic memories, electric motors, precision medical tools, also complex engineering applications.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in tiny dimensions, which allows their use in miniature devices
Cons
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- We recommend casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in realizing threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, small components of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is higher than average,
Pull force analysis
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what it depends on?
- with the application of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- with a cross-section no less than 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
- for force acting at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Gap (betwixt the magnet and the metal), as even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or debris).
- Direction of force – maximum parameter is available only during pulling at a 90° angle. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the surface is standardly many times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Plate material – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic properties and holding force.
- Smoothness – full contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Temperature influence – high temperature reduces magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity was measured by applying a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, whereas under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Warnings
Nickel coating and allergies
Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. If you have an allergy, prevent direct skin contact and choose versions in plastic housing.
Compass and GPS
A strong magnetic field interferes with the functioning of compasses in smartphones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Fire warning
Dust produced during grinding of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Choking Hazard
These products are not toys. Swallowing a few magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a severe health hazard and requires immediate surgery.
Operating temperature
Do not overheat. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, look for HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Hand protection
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Beware of splinters
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets close to a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetism can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Medical interference
Individuals with a pacemaker have to maintain an large gap from magnets. The magnetism can disrupt the functioning of the life-saving device.
Powerful field
Use magnets consciously. Their immense force can surprise even professionals. Stay alert and respect their force.
