Other products
Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.
Advantages
- They have constant strength, and over nearly 10 years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- They feature excellent resistance to magnetism drop as a result of external fields,
- The use of an aesthetic layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to present itself better,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of accurate modeling as well as optimizing to concrete needs,
- Significant place in innovative solutions – they find application in HDD drives, drive modules, medical devices, as well as technologically advanced constructions.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Limitations
- They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in special housings. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we advise our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- We suggest casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what contributes to it?
- using a base made of low-carbon steel, functioning as a magnetic yoke
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- at room temperature
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Gap between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) drastically reduces the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet holds much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Element thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – different alloys attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was determined using a polished steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, whereas under parallel forces the holding force is lower. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
H&S for magnets
This is not a toy
Strictly store magnets away from children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are life-threatening.
Magnet fragility
Despite metallic appearance, the material is delicate and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Dust explosion hazard
Fire hazard: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
Electronic devices
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Crushing risk
Big blocks can smash fingers in a fraction of a second. Under no circumstances place your hand between two attracting surfaces.
Allergic reactions
Allergy Notice: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If skin irritation happens, cease handling magnets and use protective gear.
Keep away from electronics
GPS units and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can ruin the sensors in your phone.
Powerful field
Use magnets consciously. Their immense force can shock even experienced users. Plan your moves and do not underestimate their power.
Implant safety
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets affect electronics. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Heat sensitivity
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to temperature. If you require resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
