Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They retain magnetic properties for around ten years – the drop is just ~1% (in theory),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- A magnet with a smooth silver surface has an effective appearance,
- Magnets are distinguished by excellent magnetic induction on the working surface,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling functioning at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of detailed machining and adapting to concrete conditions,
- Significant place in future technologies – they find application in magnetic memories, brushless drives, precision medical tools, and modern systems.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Cons
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we recommend placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- We recommend a housing - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in realizing nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small elements of these products are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- With large orders the cost of neodymium magnets is a challenge,
Lifting parameters
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what it depends on?
- on a block made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
- whose transverse dimension reaches at least 10 mm
- with a surface free of scratches
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- at standard ambient temperature
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (paint, dirt, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Material type – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is possible only on smooth steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Thermal factor – high temperature reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Conscious usage
Before use, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Be predictive.
Finger safety
Large magnets can smash fingers in a fraction of a second. Never put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Heat sensitivity
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Skin irritation risks
Studies show that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. For allergy sufferers, avoid direct skin contact and choose coated magnets.
Life threat
Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields disrupt medical devices. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Dust explosion hazard
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Protective goggles
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are very brittle. Collision of two magnets leads to them cracking into small pieces.
GPS Danger
An intense magnetic field interferes with the operation of compasses in phones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Product not for children
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Swallowing a few magnets may result in them attracting across intestines, which poses a critical condition and requires urgent medical intervention.
Cards and drives
Device Safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, mechanical watches).
