Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose power, even after around ten years – the drop in lifting capacity is only ~1% (based on measurements),
- They maintain their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- In other words, due to the shiny layer of nickel, the element becomes visually attractive,
- They are known for high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which increases their power,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and are able to act (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Considering the option of free forming and adaptation to individualized requirements, NdFeB magnets can be created in a wide range of forms and dimensions, which makes them more universal,
- Wide application in future technologies – they serve a role in magnetic memories, brushless drives, precision medical tools, and complex engineering applications.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in tiny dimensions, which makes them useful in miniature devices
Weaknesses
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we suggest using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited ability of producing nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - recommended is a housing - magnet mounting.
- Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small components of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- Due to complex production process, their price is relatively high,
Pull force analysis
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what affects it?
- with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- with zero gap (without impurities)
- under perpendicular force vector (90-degree angle)
- in temp. approx. 20°C
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Gap between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by veneer or dirt) significantly weakens the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Angle of force application – highest force is available only during perpendicular pulling. The force required to slide of the magnet along the plate is standardly many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Base massiveness – too thin steel does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be wasted into the air.
- Steel type – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Alloy steels lower magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the plate, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Operating temperature – neodymium magnets have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they lose power, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, however under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Warnings
Material brittleness
Watch out for shards. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Mechanical processing
Drilling and cutting of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Safe distance
Device Safety: Neodymium magnets can damage data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Health Danger
For implant holders: Powerful magnets affect electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or ask another person to handle the magnets.
Magnetic interference
GPS units and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Maximum temperature
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Adults only
Only for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, causing severe trauma. Store out of reach of kids and pets.
Caution required
Before starting, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
Hand protection
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, crushing, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Allergy Warning
Nickel alert: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If redness happens, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
