Other offers
Strengths as well as weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Pros
- They do not lose power, even after nearly ten years – the drop in power is only ~1% (theoretically),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- In other words, due to the shiny finish of gold, the element becomes visually attractive,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a powerful magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their shape) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- In view of the potential of free forming and adaptation to unique solutions, magnetic components can be produced in a broad palette of shapes and sizes, which increases their versatility,
- Huge importance in electronics industry – they are utilized in HDD drives, motor assemblies, medical devices, as well as industrial machines.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Limitations
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complex shapes in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mount.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child safety. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what contributes to it?
- on a plate made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic field
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- characterized by smoothness
- with zero gap (without paint)
- under vertical force direction (90-degree angle)
- in temp. approx. 20°C
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Distance (between the magnet and the metal), because even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
- Force direction – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may attract less.
- Surface finish – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, weakening the magnet.
- Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured by applying a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
GPS Danger
Navigation devices and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Mechanical processing
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Do not process magnets in home conditions as this may cause fire.
Beware of splinters
Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. Wear goggles.
Swallowing risk
These products are not intended for children. Swallowing a few magnets can lead to them attracting across intestines, which constitutes a direct threat to life and requires urgent medical intervention.
Threat to electronics
Avoid bringing magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and erase data from cards.
Respect the power
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets attract from a long distance and connect with huge force, often quicker than you can move away.
Health Danger
For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields affect electronics. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Power loss in heat
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to heat. If you need resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Metal Allergy
Certain individuals experience a contact allergy to nickel, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Extended handling may cause skin redness. We strongly advise use safety gloves.
Physical harm
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so great that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
