Strengths as well as weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They have constant strength, and over around 10 years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- A magnet with a smooth silver surface has an effective appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a maximum magnetic field – this is a key feature,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, allowing for functioning at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to flexibility in shaping and the ability to modify to unusual requirements,
- Fundamental importance in advanced technology sectors – they serve a role in data components, electromotive mechanisms, advanced medical instruments, and complex engineering applications.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in compact dimensions, which allows their use in compact constructions
Limitations
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can fracture. We recommend keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- NdFeB magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- We recommend cover - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in producing nuts inside the magnet and complex forms.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, small elements of these products can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is relatively high,
Lifting parameters
Highest magnetic holding force – what affects it?
- on a block made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
- possessing a thickness of at least 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- at room temperature
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (rust, tape, gap) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Warnings
Combustion hazard
Fire hazard: Neodymium dust is explosive. Avoid machining magnets without safety gear as this risks ignition.
Choking Hazard
These products are not toys. Accidental ingestion of several magnets may result in them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Magnet fragility
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very brittle. Collision of two magnets will cause them shattering into shards.
ICD Warning
Patients with a pacemaker must keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the life-saving device.
Cards and drives
Do not bring magnets close to a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Heat warning
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, inquire about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Powerful field
Exercise caution. Neodymium magnets act from a distance and snap with massive power, often faster than you can react.
Bodily injuries
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Allergy Warning
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating contains nickel. If an allergic reaction occurs, cease working with magnets and use protective gear.
Compass and GPS
An intense magnetic field disrupts the operation of magnetometers in phones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
