Pros and cons of neodymium magnets.
Pros
- Their strength is maintained, and after approximately ten years it drops only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- Thanks to the reflective finish, the surface of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an professional appearance,
- Magnets are distinguished by huge magnetic induction on the outer layer,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, allowing for operation at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to flexibility in shaping and the ability to adapt to individual projects,
- Universal use in electronics industry – they are utilized in magnetic memories, electromotive mechanisms, advanced medical instruments, also technologically advanced constructions.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Weaknesses
- They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we recommend using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using cover - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what it depends on?
- with the application of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- with a cross-section minimum 10 mm
- with a plane free of scratches
- under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
- under axial force direction (90-degree angle)
- at temperature room level
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Clearance – existence of any layer (paint, dirt, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of generating force.
- Metal type – different alloys attracts identically. High carbon content weaken the attraction effect.
- Surface condition – ground elements ensure maximum contact, which improves force. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
No play value
NdFeB magnets are not suitable for play. Swallowing several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Impact on smartphones
Note: neodymium magnets produce a field that interferes with sensitive sensors. Maintain a separation from your mobile, tablet, and navigation systems.
Crushing risk
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, pinching, and broken bones. Use thick gloves.
Cards and drives
Intense magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, hard drives, and storage devices. Keep a distance of min. 10 cm.
Machining danger
Dust created during machining of magnets is flammable. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Powerful field
Be careful. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and connect with massive power, often quicker than you can move away.
Maximum temperature
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Avoid contact if allergic
Certain individuals suffer from a contact allergy to nickel, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact may cause a rash. It is best to wear safety gloves.
ICD Warning
Health Alert: Neodymium magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Shattering risk
Despite metallic appearance, the material is delicate and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
