Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Holders with a hook are indispensable in large-format stores and warehouses for suspending advertisements (POS systems). It is a universal hanger that you can move to another place at any time without a trace.
Yes, the hook is an element screwed into a bushing with a metric thread (e.g., M4, M5, M6 - check description). Thanks to this, one magnet can perform many functions - sometimes be a hook, and sometimes a holder for a bolt.
You will get the greatest force by mounting the magnet on a thick, smooth steel surface vertically. For heavy ceiling ads or tools, we recommend choosing a magnet with a considerable power reserve.
Thanks to the metal cover, attraction force is concentrated, which significantly increases capacity compared to a bare magnet. The housing ensures mechanical durability, which is important in industrial and assembly conditions.
In the bathroom or kitchen, they will work perfectly, provided they are not directly splashed with water. Metal elements can rust with constant contact with atmospheric moisture.

Strengths as well as weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.

Strengths

Besides their stability, neodymium magnets are valued for these benefits:
  • They have stable power, and over nearly 10 years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
  • They do not lose their magnetic properties even under external field action,
  • Thanks to the reflective finish, the surface of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an aesthetic appearance,
  • They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which increases their power,
  • Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for action at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
  • Thanks to flexibility in forming and the ability to adapt to complex applications,
  • Wide application in innovative solutions – they are used in data components, electric motors, advanced medical instruments, and multitasking production systems.
  • Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,

Weaknesses

Characteristics of disadvantages of neodymium magnets: weaknesses and usage proposals
  • They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in special housings. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
  • We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
  • They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
  • Limited ability of producing nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - recommended is casing - magnetic holder.
  • Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these magnets are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
  • Due to expensive raw materials, their price is higher than average,

Pull force analysis

Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnetwhat affects it?

Holding force of 14.50 kg is a result of laboratory testing executed under the following configuration:
  • using a plate made of mild steel, functioning as a magnetic yoke
  • with a thickness no less than 10 mm
  • characterized by lack of roughness
  • without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
  • during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
  • at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius

Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors

Holding efficiency is influenced by working environment parameters, such as (from most important):
  • Gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), because even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a drastic drop in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
  • Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When slipping, the magnet holds significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
  • Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Steel type – low-carbon steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures decrease magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
  • Smoothness – ideal contact is possible only on smooth steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
  • Operating temperature – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and in frost they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).

Lifting capacity was assessed by applying a polished steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.

Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Phone sensors

A powerful magnetic field interferes with the operation of compasses in phones and navigation systems. Keep magnets near a device to prevent breaking the sensors.

Safe operation

Use magnets with awareness. Their immense force can surprise even professionals. Stay alert and do not underestimate their force.

Do not overheat magnets

Do not overheat. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you need resistance above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).

No play value

Adult use only. Small elements can be swallowed, leading to intestinal necrosis. Keep out of reach of kids and pets.

Nickel allergy

It is widely known that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. If you have an allergy, prevent touching magnets with bare hands or choose encased magnets.

Threat to electronics

Powerful magnetic fields can corrupt files on credit cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Stay away of min. 10 cm.

Eye protection

Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.

Physical harm

Big blocks can crush fingers instantly. Do not place your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.

Medical implants

Patients with a ICD have to keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can disrupt the operation of the life-saving device.

Mechanical processing

Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
