Other products
Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.
Strengths
- Their magnetic field is durable, and after approximately ten years it drops only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They feature excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties as a result of external fields,
- Thanks to the shiny finish, the surface of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an aesthetic appearance,
- They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which affects their effectiveness,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in shaping and the ability to modify to specific needs,
- Huge importance in modern industrial fields – they are commonly used in hard drives, brushless drives, diagnostic systems, also technologically advanced constructions.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in tiny dimensions, which enables their usage in compact constructions
Cons
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- They rust in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- We recommend a housing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in producing nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
- Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small components of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is higher than average,
Lifting parameters
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what it depends on?
- using a sheet made of high-permeability steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- with a thickness minimum 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- with direct contact (no impurities)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- in stable room temperature
Determinants of lifting force in real conditions
- Air gap (betwixt the magnet and the metal), as even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or debris).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick steel does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be escaped into the air.
- Steel type – low-carbon steel attracts best. Alloy steels reduce magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of force. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Electronic hazard
Device Safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and delicate electronics (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Magnetic interference
GPS units and mobile phones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Keep away from children
Adult use only. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, causing severe trauma. Keep away from kids and pets.
Power loss in heat
Control the heat. Exposing the magnet to high heat will permanently weaken its properties and strength.
Medical interference
Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Flammability
Dust produced during machining of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
Shattering risk
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Warning for allergy sufferers
Nickel alert: The nickel-copper-nickel coating contains nickel. If an allergic reaction happens, immediately stop handling magnets and use protective gear.
Finger safety
Large magnets can crush fingers instantly. Never put your hand between two attracting surfaces.
Conscious usage
Use magnets with awareness. Their huge power can surprise even experienced users. Plan your moves and do not underestimate their force.
