Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They retain full power for almost 10 years – the loss is just ~1% (based on simulations),
- Neodymium magnets are distinguished by exceptionally resistant to loss of magnetic properties caused by external interference,
- The use of an metallic layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- Neodymium magnets ensure maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling operation at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- In view of the possibility of accurate molding and customization to custom needs, neodymium magnets can be manufactured in a broad palette of shapes and sizes, which amplifies use scope,
- Fundamental importance in modern technologies – they are utilized in magnetic memories, electromotive mechanisms, advanced medical instruments, also complex engineering applications.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Disadvantages
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited possibility of making threads in the magnet and complex shapes - preferred is cover - magnet mounting.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is higher than average,
Holding force characteristics
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what it depends on?
- with the use of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with a plane free of scratches
- under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), since even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Hardened steels may attract less.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured with the use of a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the load capacity.
H&S for magnets
Conscious usage
Use magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can shock even experienced users. Plan your moves and respect their power.
Warning for heart patients
Individuals with a pacemaker must keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can stop the functioning of the implant.
No play value
Only for adults. Tiny parts can be swallowed, leading to serious injuries. Keep away from kids and pets.
Electronic hazard
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Bone fractures
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Use thick gloves.
GPS Danger
Navigation devices and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Protective goggles
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Allergy Warning
Studies show that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a strong allergen. For allergy sufferers, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands or select versions in plastic housing.
Do not drill into magnets
Mechanical processing of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire risk. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Operating temperature
Do not overheat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to temperature. If you need resistance above 80°C, inquire about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
