Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose magnetism, even over around 10 years – the drop in lifting capacity is only ~1% (based on measurements),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- Thanks to the elegant finish, the coating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an modern appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a concentrated magnetic field – this is one of their assets,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, enabling action at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of precise forming and optimizing to atypical conditions,
- Significant place in modern technologies – they find application in HDD drives, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, and industrial machines.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Limitations
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Limited ability of producing nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - recommended is casing - magnetic holder.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price exceeds standard values,
Lifting parameters
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what affects it?
- using a base made of low-carbon steel, functioning as a magnetic yoke
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- with a surface free of scratches
- without the slightest clearance between the magnet and steel
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Gap (between the magnet and the metal), as even a tiny distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or debris).
- Force direction – note that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick steel causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be wasted into the air.
- Metal type – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface quality – the more even the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Roughness acts like micro-gaps.
- Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under shearing force the holding force is lower. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Material brittleness
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Nickel coating and allergies
Some people suffer from a sensitization to Ni, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact can result in an allergic reaction. We strongly advise wear protective gloves.
Combustion hazard
Dust created during machining of magnets is self-igniting. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Demagnetization risk
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose power when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Pinching danger
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Medical implants
Individuals with a ICD must keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetic field can interfere with the operation of the implant.
Choking Hazard
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Eating several magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a critical condition and necessitates immediate surgery.
Compass and GPS
Note: rare earth magnets produce a field that disrupts precision electronics. Maintain a safe distance from your phone, tablet, and navigation systems.
Keep away from computers
Powerful magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Do not underestimate power
Before starting, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
