Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose strength, even over approximately ten years – the drop in power is only ~1% (theoretically),
- They are extremely resistant to demagnetization induced by external magnetic fields,
- A magnet with a metallic silver surface looks better,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a intense magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for functioning at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of individual machining and modifying to concrete conditions,
- Key role in high-tech industry – they are commonly used in HDD drives, brushless drives, medical equipment, as well as other advanced devices.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Cons
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- We recommend cover - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small components of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price exceeds standard values,
Holding force characteristics
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what affects it?
- on a plate made of mild steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
- with a thickness minimum 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- under vertical application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Distance (betwixt the magnet and the metal), because even a microscopic distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or debris).
- Load vector – maximum parameter is reached only during pulling at a 90° angle. The shear force of the magnet along the surface is usually many times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Steel type – low-carbon steel attracts best. Higher carbon content decrease magnetic properties and holding force.
- Surface quality – the more even the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal factor – high temperature reduces magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, in contrast under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
GPS and phone interference
An intense magnetic field disrupts the functioning of compasses in smartphones and navigation systems. Maintain magnets near a device to prevent breaking the sensors.
Keep away from children
Only for adults. Tiny parts can be swallowed, leading to severe trauma. Keep away from kids and pets.
Pacemakers
Patients with a pacemaker should maintain an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the functioning of the life-saving device.
Fire warning
Dust produced during cutting of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Threat to electronics
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Powerful field
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and connect with huge force, often faster than you can move away.
Nickel allergy
A percentage of the population suffer from a hypersensitivity to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to a rash. We strongly advise wear safety gloves.
Serious injuries
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Thermal limits
Standard neodymium magnets (grade N) lose power when the temperature surpasses 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Protective goggles
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
