Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.

Advantages

In addition to their pulling strength, neodymium magnets provide the following advantages:
  • They virtually do not lose strength, because even after 10 years the performance loss is only ~1% (based on calculations),
  • They maintain their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
  • A magnet with a shiny nickel surface looks better,
  • Magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet turns out to be extremely intense,
  • Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Considering the potential of free forming and customization to specialized projects, magnetic components can be modeled in a variety of forms and dimensions, which makes them more universal,
  • Key role in advanced technology sectors – they are used in computer drives, electric drive systems, medical equipment, and other advanced devices.
  • Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,

Cons

Characteristics of disadvantages of neodymium magnets: weaknesses and usage proposals
  • Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We advise keeping them in a special holder, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
  • Neodymium magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
  • They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
  • We suggest casing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in realizing threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
  • Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small components of these devices can disrupt the diagnostic process medical in case of swallowing.
  • High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities

Pull force analysis

Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameterswhat affects it?

Information about lifting capacity was determined for ideal contact conditions, including:
  • with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
  • with a cross-section minimum 10 mm
  • with a plane perfectly flat
  • under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
  • for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
  • at temperature room level

Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice

Please note that the application force will differ depending on elements below, in order of importance:
  • Gap between surfaces – every millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or dirt) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
  • Load vector – maximum parameter is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the plate is usually many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
  • Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Material composition – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
  • Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which increases field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
  • Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.

Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the holding force.

H&S for magnets
Demagnetization risk

Control the heat. Exposing the magnet to high heat will ruin its magnetic structure and strength.

Impact on smartphones

Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can permanently damage the internal compass in your phone.

Electronic devices

Equipment safety: Neodymium magnets can damage payment cards and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).

Life threat

For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields disrupt electronics. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.

Fire warning

Drilling and cutting of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.

Safe operation

Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.

Physical harm

Large magnets can break fingers in a fraction of a second. Under no circumstances place your hand between two strong magnets.

Sensitization to coating

A percentage of the population have a sensitization to Ni, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact can result in skin redness. We recommend use protective gloves.

Danger to the youngest

These products are not suitable for play. Swallowing several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a critical condition and necessitates urgent medical intervention.

Eye protection

Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
