Pros and cons of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They have constant strength, and over around ten years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They maintain their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- A magnet with a metallic nickel surface has better aesthetics,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which increases their power,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of detailed forming as well as optimizing to individual needs,
- Huge importance in future technologies – they are commonly used in computer drives, electric motors, advanced medical instruments, and industrial machines.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Weaknesses
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in producing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mount.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child safety. Additionally, small components of these magnets are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what affects it?
- on a plate made of structural steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
- with a thickness of at least 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- in stable room temperature
Determinants of lifting force in real conditions
- Air gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), as even a microscopic distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or dirt).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Plate thickness – too thin steel causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be escaped into the air.
- Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of force. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
ICD Warning
Medical warning: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Maximum temperature
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will permanently weaken its properties and strength.
Threat to navigation
An intense magnetic field interferes with the functioning of magnetometers in phones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets near a device to prevent breaking the sensors.
Allergic reactions
Medical facts indicate that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a strong allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, prevent direct skin contact or choose versions in plastic housing.
Fragile material
Despite metallic appearance, the material is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Combustion hazard
Powder generated during machining of magnets is flammable. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Protect data
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Do not underestimate power
Exercise caution. Neodymium magnets attract from a long distance and connect with huge force, often quicker than you can react.
Choking Hazard
These products are not suitable for play. Swallowing several magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a critical condition and necessitates immediate surgery.
Bone fractures
Big blocks can break fingers instantly. Under no circumstances put your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
