Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Magnet pull force

Magnetic Induction

Other offers

This type of holder is perfect for mounting magnetic latches in cabinets, doors, and flaps. The holder can be screwed directly to wood, wall, metal, or plastic. The steel cup strengthens the magnet force and protects it from cracking upon impact.
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very hard but also brittle. It is best to use a screw with a countersunk head perfectly matched to the hole. Using too large a countersunk screw may cause the magnetic ring to crack.
For two magnets screwed with cones facing each other (faces) to attract, they must have different polarity. If you need a pair, ask about availability of complementary sets or check the description. A set of magnet + plate is cheaper and holds just as strongly.
This force is measured in ideal laboratory conditions when pulling at a 90-degree angle. To increase friction and prevent sliding, it is worth sticking a piece of rubber or anti-slip tape on the magnet. When selecting a magnet for a cabinet, remember that the air gap (e.g., bumpers, seals) weakens the grip.
The steel housing (cup/pot) acts as a magnetic shield, directing all power to the front of the holder. The housing absorbs impacts, preventing the magnet from crumbling and cracking. A bare ring has a dispersed field on both sides but is weaker in point holding.

Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.

Advantages

Besides their immense strength, neodymium magnets offer the following advantages:
  • They have stable power, and over around 10 years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
  • They have excellent resistance to magnetic field loss when exposed to opposing magnetic fields,
  • In other words, due to the aesthetic surface of nickel, the element looks attractive,
  • The surface of neodymium magnets generates a unique magnetic field – this is one of their assets,
  • Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
  • Considering the possibility of free molding and adaptation to individualized needs, neodymium magnets can be manufactured in a wide range of forms and dimensions, which makes them more universal,
  • Wide application in advanced technology sectors – they are utilized in hard drives, brushless drives, advanced medical instruments, as well as other advanced devices.
  • Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in small dimensions, which makes them useful in miniature devices

Weaknesses

What to avoid - cons of neodymium magnets: application proposals
  • At strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
  • We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore while using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
  • Limited ability of creating threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - recommended is casing - magnet mounting.
  • Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, small components of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
  • Due to complex production process, their price exceeds standard values,

Pull force analysis

Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?

Breakaway force was determined for the most favorable conditions, assuming:
  • with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
  • whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
  • with a surface cleaned and smooth
  • without any insulating layer between the magnet and steel
  • for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
  • in neutral thermal conditions

Determinants of lifting force in real conditions

Bear in mind that the magnet holding will differ subject to elements below, in order of importance:
  • Gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), since even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
  • Force direction – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
  • Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Metal type – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content worsen the interaction with the magnet.
  • Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
  • Temperature influence – hot environment reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.

Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.

Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Maximum temperature

Control the heat. Exposing the magnet to high heat will ruin its properties and pulling force.

Fire risk

Fire warning: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Do not process magnets without safety gear as this may cause fire.

Bone fractures

Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can result in hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.

Magnet fragility

NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are prone to chipping. Clashing of two magnets leads to them cracking into small pieces.

Conscious usage

Handle magnets consciously. Their immense force can surprise even professionals. Stay alert and do not underestimate their power.

Swallowing risk

Only for adults. Small elements pose a choking risk, causing severe trauma. Store out of reach of children and animals.

Life threat

For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields affect electronics. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.

Protect data

Avoid bringing magnets close to a wallet, computer, or TV. The magnetism can destroy these devices and erase data from cards.

Compass and GPS

A strong magnetic field disrupts the functioning of magnetometers in smartphones and navigation systems. Maintain magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.

Nickel coating and allergies

Medical facts indicate that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, avoid direct skin contact or opt for versions in plastic housing.
