Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Pulling force

Magnetic Field

Check out also offers

Their unique "sandwich" construction (steel-magnet-steel) short-circuits the magnetic field, giving huge force on a small surface. They are characterized by high capacity and resistance to mechanical impacts.
Mounting is done using countersunk head screws, which hide flat in the housing. They can be screwed to wood, walls, aluminum profiles, furniture boards, or plastics.
Model NCM 15x13.5x5 / N38 reaches a capacity of up to 7.00 kg, which is an impressive result for such a flat element. This force is available with direct contact with metal over the entire surface.
The steel trough (U-profile) perfectly protects glued magnets from impacts and crushing. They are ideal for heavy doors, machine flaps, molds, and fastening systems in industry.
Magnets inside are nickel-plated, and the trough has an anti-corrosion layer. With constant contact with water, corrosion may appear, so we do not recommend them for work in rain without additional protection.

Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.

Advantages

Apart from their notable magnetic energy, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • They retain magnetic properties for almost 10 years – the drop is just ~1% (according to analyses),
  • Neodymium magnets prove to be exceptionally resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external magnetic fields,
  • In other words, due to the smooth finish of gold, the element is aesthetically pleasing,
  • They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which increases their power,
  • Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are capable of working (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
  • Thanks to modularity in shaping and the capacity to adapt to specific needs,
  • Significant place in electronics industry – they are utilized in HDD drives, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, as well as other advanced devices.
  • Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications

Weaknesses

Disadvantages of neodymium magnets:
  • At strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
  • When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore during using outdoors, we recommend using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
  • We suggest a housing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
  • Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small elements of these devices can be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
  • High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities

Pull force analysis

Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnetwhat it depends on?

Breakaway force was defined for ideal contact conditions, taking into account:
  • using a sheet made of low-carbon steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
  • possessing a massiveness of minimum 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
  • with a surface free of scratches
  • without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
  • during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
  • at room temperature

Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice

Bear in mind that the magnet holding will differ subject to elements below, starting with the most relevant:
  • Air gap (betwixt the magnet and the metal), as even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or debris).
  • Force direction – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
  • Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal limits the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Plate material – mild steel gives the best results. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic permeability and holding force.
  • Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
  • Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of force. Check the thermal limit for a given model.

Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.

Precautions when working with NdFeB magnets
Nickel allergy

Some people experience a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching might lead to an allergic reaction. It is best to wear protective gloves.

Mechanical processing

Fire warning: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Do not process magnets without safety gear as this may cause fire.

Adults only

These products are not intended for children. Accidental ingestion of a few magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a direct threat to life and requires immediate surgery.

Do not underestimate power

Be careful. Rare earth magnets act from a long distance and snap with massive power, often faster than you can react.

Physical harm

Risk of injury: The pulling power is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.

Maximum temperature

Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet to high heat will permanently weaken its properties and pulling force.

Risk of cracking

NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are prone to chipping. Collision of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.

Data carriers

Avoid bringing magnets close to a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetism can destroy these devices and erase data from cards.

Pacemakers

Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.

Keep away from electronics

An intense magnetic field interferes with the functioning of compasses in phones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
