Other proposals
Strengths and weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Pros
- They have unchanged lifting capacity, and over more than 10 years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- Neodymium magnets remain extremely resistant to demagnetization caused by external magnetic fields,
- The use of an refined finish of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- Neodymium magnets deliver maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which allows for strong attraction,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to flexibility in constructing and the ability to customize to individual projects,
- Fundamental importance in high-tech industry – they are used in magnetic memories, motor assemblies, advanced medical instruments, also multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in tiny dimensions, which makes them useful in small systems
Weaknesses
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using cover - magnetic mechanism.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Additionally, small elements of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what contributes to it?
- using a base made of high-permeability steel, functioning as a circuit closing element
- whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- at room temperature
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Gap (between the magnet and the plate), since even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – the best choice is high-permeability steel. Hardened steels may attract less.
- Surface structure – the more even the surface, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal factor – high temperature weakens pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Holding force was checked on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, however under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Warnings
Demagnetization risk
Avoid heat. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
No play value
These products are not toys. Swallowing several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a critical condition and necessitates immediate surgery.
Eye protection
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Mechanical processing
Dust generated during machining of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Life threat
Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields affect electronics. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or ask another person to handle the magnets.
Serious injuries
Large magnets can smash fingers instantly. Do not place your hand between two attracting surfaces.
Precision electronics
GPS units and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a strong magnet can permanently damage the internal compass in your phone.
Powerful field
Handle magnets with awareness. Their powerful strength can shock even professionals. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
Electronic devices
Very strong magnetic fields can corrupt files on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Skin irritation risks
Some people have a contact allergy to Ni, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact can result in a rash. We strongly advise wear safety gloves.
