Other offers
Strengths as well as weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Pros
- They have stable power, and over around ten years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by external field influence,
- Thanks to the shimmering finish, the coating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an modern appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the working layer of the magnet is maximum,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are capable of working (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of individual creating and modifying to concrete needs,
- Significant place in future technologies – they serve a role in data components, motor assemblies, medical equipment, also complex engineering applications.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Cons
- They are prone to damage upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, when using outdoors
- Limited ability of making nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - preferred is a housing - magnet mounting.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small elements of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Holding force characteristics
Highest magnetic holding force – what contributes to it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with a surface cleaned and smooth
- without any insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- under vertical force direction (90-degree angle)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Gap (between the magnet and the plate), because even a microscopic distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or dirt).
- Angle of force application – maximum parameter is available only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the surface is usually many times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Steel thickness – too thin plate causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the flux to be escaped into the air.
- Material composition – different alloys attracts identically. High carbon content weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they are weaker, and in frost they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Warnings
Pacemakers
Health Alert: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Heat warning
Watch the temperature. Exposing the magnet to high heat will destroy its properties and strength.
Impact on smartphones
GPS units and mobile phones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Magnetic media
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Fire warning
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Allergy Warning
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If an allergic reaction occurs, immediately stop handling magnets and use protective gear.
Keep away from children
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Eating several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Shattering risk
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
Crushing force
Big blocks can crush fingers in a fraction of a second. Never put your hand between two strong magnets.
Handling rules
Use magnets with awareness. Their immense force can surprise even experienced users. Plan your moves and do not underestimate their force.
