Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets.
Advantages
- They virtually do not lose power, because even after 10 years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (according to literature),
- Neodymium magnets prove to be extremely resistant to demagnetization caused by external field sources,
- Thanks to the metallic finish, the coating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver gives an professional appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the working layer of the magnet turns out to be very high,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they can operate (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of detailed creating as well as adapting to complex conditions,
- Wide application in future technologies – they find application in mass storage devices, electromotive mechanisms, diagnostic systems, as well as technologically advanced constructions.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in tiny dimensions, which enables their usage in small systems
Limitations
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- Neodymium magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we suggest using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited possibility of making nuts in the magnet and complex forms - preferred is casing - mounting mechanism.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these devices are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- with the use of a yoke made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- with a thickness of at least 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- in stable room temperature
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (paint, dirt, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Angle of force application – maximum parameter is obtained only during perpendicular pulling. The shear force of the magnet along the plate is typically several times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet limits the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – different alloys attracts identically. High carbon content worsen the attraction effect.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is possible only on smooth steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the holding force.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Combustion hazard
Mechanical processing of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Phone sensors
Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that disrupts sensitive sensors. Keep a safe distance from your phone, device, and GPS.
ICD Warning
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets disrupt electronics. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Skin irritation risks
Allergy Notice: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating consists of nickel. If redness appears, immediately stop handling magnets and use protective gear.
Fragile material
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are prone to chipping. Collision of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.
Permanent damage
Do not overheat. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you require resistance above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Conscious usage
Be careful. Neodymium magnets attract from a long distance and snap with huge force, often faster than you can react.
Crushing risk
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together instantly with a force of massive weight, crushing anything in their path. Be careful!
Electronic hazard
Do not bring magnets close to a wallet, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Choking Hazard
Neodymium magnets are not intended for children. Accidental ingestion of a few magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a direct threat to life and requires immediate surgery.
