Advantages as well as disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Pros
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the performance loss is only ~1% (according to literature),
- Magnets effectively resist against demagnetization caused by external fields,
- Thanks to the shiny finish, the surface of nickel, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an visually attractive appearance,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a their surface, which increases force concentration,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in forming and the ability to modify to individual projects,
- Significant place in electronics industry – they serve a role in magnetic memories, electric drive systems, medical equipment, also multitasking production systems.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Limitations
- They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complex shapes in magnets, we propose using cover - magnetic mechanism.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these products can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is higher than average,
Lifting parameters
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what contributes to it?
- with the application of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose transverse dimension reaches at least 10 mm
- with a surface cleaned and smooth
- under conditions of gap-free contact (surface-to-surface)
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- in stable room temperature
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (rust, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Direction of force – highest force is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the surface is usually many times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Base massiveness – insufficiently thick plate does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be lost to the other side.
- Material type – the best choice is high-permeability steel. Cast iron may attract less.
- Smoothness – full contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Temperature influence – hot environment reduces pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Holding force was checked on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, whereas under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Fragile material
Protect your eyes. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Safe operation
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and connect with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Electronic devices
Intense magnetic fields can erase data on payment cards, hard drives, and storage devices. Keep a distance of min. 10 cm.
Life threat
Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields disrupt electronics. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Do not overheat magnets
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. Damage is permanent.
No play value
Strictly keep magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is high, and the effects of magnets connecting inside the body are tragic.
GPS Danger
Note: neodymium magnets generate a field that disrupts sensitive sensors. Keep a separation from your mobile, device, and navigation systems.
Bone fractures
Large magnets can break fingers in a fraction of a second. Do not put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Sensitization to coating
A percentage of the population suffer from a sensitization to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to an allergic reaction. We strongly advise wear protective gloves.
Machining danger
Machining of NdFeB material poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
