Pros and cons of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They retain attractive force for around 10 years – the drop is just ~1% (according to analyses),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- By covering with a lustrous coating of gold, the element gains an modern look,
- They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which improves attraction properties,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, allowing for action at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Considering the ability of precise shaping and customization to specialized requirements, magnetic components can be created in a variety of shapes and sizes, which amplifies use scope,
- Fundamental importance in high-tech industry – they find application in data components, brushless drives, medical devices, and complex engineering applications.
- Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Cons
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore while using outdoors, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using cover - magnetic mount.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- using a sheet made of high-permeability steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- with a thickness of at least 10 mm
- with a plane free of scratches
- with total lack of distance (without impurities)
- under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Gap (between the magnet and the metal), because even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a reduction in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or debris).
- Load vector – highest force is reached only during perpendicular pulling. The shear force of the magnet along the plate is standardly many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Chemical composition of the base – mild steel gives the best results. Alloy admixtures reduce magnetic permeability and holding force.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is possible only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, reducing force.
- Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured with the use of a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, however under shearing force the holding force is lower. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Material brittleness
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
Swallowing risk
Only for adults. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, leading to serious injuries. Store away from children and animals.
Combustion hazard
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is explosive. Avoid machining magnets without safety gear as this may cause fire.
Caution required
Handle magnets with awareness. Their huge power can shock even experienced users. Stay alert and respect their power.
Impact on smartphones
Remember: rare earth magnets generate a field that interferes with sensitive sensors. Maintain a safe distance from your phone, tablet, and navigation systems.
Heat warning
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Crushing force
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Medical implants
For implant holders: Powerful magnets disrupt electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Allergic reactions
Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a potent allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, avoid touching magnets with bare hands and opt for encased magnets.
Electronic devices
Powerful magnetic fields can corrupt files on payment cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Stay away of at least 10 cm.
