Advantages and disadvantages of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose magnetism, even after approximately 10 years – the decrease in strength is only ~1% (theoretically),
- They are noted for resistance to demagnetization induced by presence of other magnetic fields,
- Thanks to the elegant finish, the coating of nickel, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an visually attractive appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the working part of the magnet remains extremely intense,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling operation at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to flexibility in designing and the ability to customize to unusual requirements,
- Key role in electronics industry – they are utilized in computer drives, electric motors, medical devices, and complex engineering applications.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Cons
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We advise keeping them in a steel housing, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we suggest using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Limited ability of making threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - recommended is a housing - magnetic holder.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Pull force analysis
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what it depends on?
- with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with an ground contact surface
- with zero gap (without coatings)
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at ambient temperature room level
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (paint, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Metal type – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the attraction effect.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, whereas under shearing force the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the holding force.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Sensitization to coating
A percentage of the population suffer from a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact may cause a rash. We recommend use safety gloves.
Pinching danger
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in hematomas, pinching, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Handling rules
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and snap with massive power, often quicker than you can react.
Dust is flammable
Powder produced during machining of magnets is self-igniting. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
Safe distance
Intense magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Stay away of at least 10 cm.
Shattering risk
NdFeB magnets are ceramic materials, which means they are very brittle. Clashing of two magnets will cause them cracking into shards.
Product not for children
Only for adults. Small elements pose a choking risk, leading to serious injuries. Store out of reach of kids and pets.
Heat sensitivity
Watch the temperature. Heating the magnet to high heat will permanently weaken its magnetic structure and strength.
ICD Warning
Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Magnetic interference
Be aware: neodymium magnets generate a field that interferes with precision electronics. Maintain a separation from your phone, tablet, and navigation systems.
