Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Strengths
- They retain magnetic properties for almost ten years – the drop is just ~1% (according to analyses),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by external field influence,
- Thanks to the metallic finish, the surface of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver gives an modern appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the working layer of the magnet remains strong,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for functioning at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to the option of precise forming and customization to unique requirements, magnetic components can be created in a variety of geometric configurations, which amplifies use scope,
- Key role in high-tech industry – they are commonly used in mass storage devices, electric drive systems, medical equipment, also complex engineering applications.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Limitations
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore when using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Limited ability of producing nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - preferred is a housing - magnet mounting.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small components of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to complex production process, their price is higher than average,
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what contributes to it?
- using a base made of mild steel, serving as a magnetic yoke
- with a thickness minimum 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- without the slightest clearance between the magnet and steel
- under vertical force vector (90-degree angle)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Distance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Steel thickness – too thin plate causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be wasted into the air.
- Material type – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which increases force. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Precautions when working with NdFeB magnets
Product not for children
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Accidental ingestion of several magnets may result in them attracting across intestines, which constitutes a critical condition and requires urgent medical intervention.
Phone sensors
Remember: rare earth magnets generate a field that disrupts precision electronics. Keep a safe distance from your mobile, device, and GPS.
Dust explosion hazard
Machining of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Magnet fragility
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon violent connection, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Warning for allergy sufferers
Some people suffer from a contact allergy to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to skin redness. It is best to use protective gloves.
Hand protection
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together instantly with a force of massive weight, crushing anything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Power loss in heat
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Medical interference
Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Handling guide
Exercise caution. Neodymium magnets attract from a long distance and connect with huge force, often quicker than you can react.
