Pros and cons of neodymium magnets.
Advantages
- They have unchanged lifting capacity, and over nearly ten years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- Neodymium magnets prove to be highly resistant to loss of magnetic properties caused by external magnetic fields,
- By applying a lustrous coating of nickel, the element has an elegant look,
- Neodymium magnets deliver maximum magnetic induction on a small surface, which allows for strong attraction,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Thanks to freedom in shaping and the capacity to adapt to unusual requirements,
- Wide application in modern technologies – they find application in magnetic memories, drive modules, medical equipment, and industrial machines.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- We recommend cover - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in realizing threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is higher than average,
Pull force analysis
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what affects it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose transverse dimension equals approx. 10 mm
- with a surface free of scratches
- under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
- under axial force direction (90-degree angle)
- at room temperature
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, dirt, gap) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Base massiveness – insufficiently thick plate does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be escaped to the other side.
- Plate material – low-carbon steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures reduce magnetic permeability and holding force.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and in frost they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was tested on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Do not give to children
These products are not toys. Accidental ingestion of several magnets can lead to them attracting across intestines, which constitutes a severe health hazard and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Allergic reactions
Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, avoid touching magnets with bare hands or select versions in plastic housing.
Warning for heart patients
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets disrupt medical devices. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or request help to work with the magnets.
Fire risk
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Do not underestimate power
Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
Heat warning
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will ruin its properties and strength.
Protect data
Powerful magnetic fields can corrupt files on payment cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Stay away of at least 10 cm.
Phone sensors
Note: rare earth magnets produce a field that confuses sensitive sensors. Keep a separation from your mobile, device, and GPS.
Material brittleness
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Serious injuries
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, crushing anything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
