Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- Their strength remains stable, and after around ten years it drops only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They show high resistance to demagnetization induced by external field influence,
- Thanks to the elegant finish, the coating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver gives an clean appearance,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which affects their effectiveness,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Possibility of individual machining and optimizing to defined requirements,
- Fundamental importance in advanced technology sectors – they are utilized in HDD drives, brushless drives, advanced medical instruments, also modern systems.
- Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Disadvantages
- They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in special housings. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- We suggest casing - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in creating nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child safety. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these devices are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets is economically unviable,
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting capacity of the magnet – what affects it?
- using a sheet made of mild steel, functioning as a circuit closing element
- with a thickness no less than 10 mm
- with a plane free of scratches
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Distance (between the magnet and the metal), because even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
- Angle of force application – maximum parameter is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the plate is typically many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Plate thickness – insufficiently thick steel causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be escaped into the air.
- Material composition – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured with the use of a polished steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Machining danger
Mechanical processing of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Heat warning
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Serious injuries
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can cause hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Handling rules
Handle magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can shock even experienced users. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their power.
Fragile material
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Nickel coating and allergies
It is widely known that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, prevent touching magnets with bare hands and opt for coated magnets.
Precision electronics
GPS units and smartphones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
No play value
Always store magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is significant, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are life-threatening.
Implant safety
Health Alert: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Electronic hazard
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
