Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Other offers

Thanks to the use of soft Santoprene rubber coating, these holders do not scratch paint and ensure excellent grip even on slippery surfaces. Used for mounting taxi beacons, antennas, cameras, and license plates at rallies, where quick disassembly counts. The internal threaded bushing allows quick mounting of any element, creating a solid mounting point without drilling holes in the sheet metal.
Full rubberizing effectively isolates the magnetic system from moisture, road salt, and dirt, making them an ideal solution for outdoor applications. Santoprene rubber does not rot in the sun and retains flexibility even during frosts, guaranteeing durability. This is the recommended choice for mounting on a car roof, because you can be sure that rusty stains will not appear on the paint after rain.
Although rubber creates a small distance reducing perpendicular pull-off force, it drastically increases resistance when trying to slide the magnet across the surface. Thanks to this, these magnets hold onto the car roof excellently even at high speeds and wind resistance. They ensure maximum stability of mounting under vibrations, which is crucial in transport and automotive.
The holder is equipped with a steel bushing with an internal thread (you will find the thread size in the product name, e.g., M4, M6, M8). This enables quick creation of a magnetic base for work lighting, reversing cameras, sensors, or advertising boards.
Most rubberized holders use a special multi-pole system (often close to a Halbach array) on a steel base. Thanks to this, the magnet holds the sheet metal strongly but does not disturb devices in the cabin or attract metal objects from afar.

Pros and cons of rare earth magnets.

Pros

Apart from their consistent power, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • They virtually do not lose power, because even after 10 years the performance loss is only ~1% (based on calculations),
  • They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
  • By applying a lustrous layer of silver, the element gains an modern look,
  • Magnets are distinguished by extremely high magnetic induction on the surface,
  • Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their shape) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Due to the ability of free shaping and adaptation to custom projects, magnetic components can be modeled in a variety of forms and dimensions, which expands the range of possible applications,
  • Huge importance in high-tech industry – they serve a role in mass storage devices, electromotive mechanisms, diagnostic systems, also complex engineering applications.
  • Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,

Disadvantages

What to avoid - cons of neodymium magnets: weaknesses and usage proposals
  • To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we recommend using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
  • When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore during using outdoors, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
  • Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mechanism.
  • Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
  • High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities

Holding force characteristics

Magnetic strength at its maximum – what contributes to it?

Holding force of 6.40 kg is a result of laboratory testing conducted under standard conditions:
  • on a plate made of structural steel, effectively closing the magnetic field
  • possessing a thickness of minimum 10 mm to avoid saturation
  • with an polished contact surface
  • without any clearance between the magnet and steel
  • during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
  • in neutral thermal conditions

Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice

Bear in mind that the magnet holding may be lower subject to elements below, starting with the most relevant:
  • Space between magnet and steel – every millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) diminishes the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
  • Angle of force application – highest force is reached only during pulling at a 90° angle. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the plate is typically many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
  • Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
  • Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
  • Surface finish – ideal contact is possible only on smooth steel. Rough texture create air cushions, reducing force.
  • Temperature influence – hot environment reduces pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.

Lifting capacity testing was performed on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.

Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Medical implants

Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields affect electronics. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or ask another person to handle the magnets.

Serious injuries

Risk of injury: The pulling power is so immense that it can result in blood blisters, pinching, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.

Impact on smartphones

Be aware: neodymium magnets produce a field that confuses sensitive sensors. Keep a safe distance from your phone, device, and navigation systems.

Nickel coating and allergies

It is widely known that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands and choose encased magnets.

Dust explosion hazard

Fire hazard: Rare earth powder is explosive. Do not process magnets in home conditions as this may cause fire.

Maximum temperature

Control the heat. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will permanently weaken its properties and strength.

Magnet fragility

NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very brittle. Clashing of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.

Data carriers

Intense magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Keep a distance of at least 10 cm.

Swallowing risk

Neodymium magnets are not toys. Swallowing a few magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a direct threat to life and necessitates immediate surgery.

Powerful field

Handle magnets with awareness. Their powerful strength can shock even professionals. Plan your moves and do not underestimate their power.
