Strengths and weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose strength, even during approximately ten years – the reduction in power is only ~1% (based on measurements),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- In other words, due to the shiny finish of nickel, the element becomes visually attractive,
- Magnetic induction on the working layer of the magnet turns out to be strong,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, allowing for operation at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to flexibility in constructing and the capacity to customize to client solutions,
- Huge importance in advanced technology sectors – they are utilized in mass storage devices, electric motors, advanced medical instruments, and complex engineering applications.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Cons
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- We recommend casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Additionally, small elements of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is higher than average,
Lifting parameters
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what affects it?
- using a base made of low-carbon steel, functioning as a magnetic yoke
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- with zero gap (without paint)
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Gap (betwixt the magnet and the metal), as even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or debris).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Metal type – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the plate, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Temperature – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Holding force was tested on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Warnings
GPS and phone interference
Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that disrupts precision electronics. Keep a safe distance from your mobile, device, and GPS.
ICD Warning
Life threat: Strong magnets can turn off pacemakers and defibrillators. Stay away if you have medical devices.
Safe distance
Avoid bringing magnets close to a wallet, laptop, or TV. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and erase data from cards.
Dust explosion hazard
Powder produced during cutting of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Avoid contact if allergic
Certain individuals suffer from a hypersensitivity to nickel, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching might lead to skin redness. We strongly advise use protective gloves.
Risk of cracking
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
No play value
Always store magnets away from children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are life-threatening.
Power loss in heat
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to temperature. If you require resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Powerful field
Use magnets consciously. Their huge power can surprise even experienced users. Stay alert and do not underestimate their power.
Pinching danger
Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so great that it can result in blood blisters, pinching, and broken bones. Use thick gloves.
