Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Strengths
- They do not lose power, even during around 10 years – the reduction in lifting capacity is only ~1% (theoretically),
- They are extremely resistant to demagnetization induced by external magnetic fields,
- A magnet with a shiny silver surface has better aesthetics,
- Magnets have huge magnetic induction on the active area,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in shaping and the capacity to adapt to complex applications,
- Universal use in electronics industry – they are used in HDD drives, electric drive systems, precision medical tools, also modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in tiny dimensions, which makes them useful in small systems
Weaknesses
- They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in special housings. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Limited ability of producing nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - recommended is casing - mounting mechanism.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small elements of these magnets are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Pull force analysis
Highest magnetic holding force – what affects it?
- on a base made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic field
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Distance (between the magnet and the metal), since even a microscopic distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or debris).
- Force direction – note that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick sheet causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the flux to be wasted into the air.
- Material type – the best choice is pure iron steel. Hardened steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal factor – hot environment weakens pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity was measured using a steel plate with a smooth surface of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under shearing force the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate reduces the holding force.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Allergy Warning
Nickel alert: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If skin irritation occurs, immediately stop handling magnets and use protective gear.
Keep away from electronics
GPS units and smartphones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Material brittleness
Despite metallic appearance, the material is brittle and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Fire warning
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Keep away from children
Only for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, leading to intestinal necrosis. Store out of reach of kids and pets.
Immense force
Handle magnets with awareness. Their huge power can surprise even experienced users. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their power.
Implant safety
For implant holders: Powerful magnets disrupt medical devices. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Operating temperature
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you need resistance above 80°C, look for special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Threat to electronics
Intense magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of at least 10 cm.
Serious injuries
Large magnets can break fingers instantly. Do not place your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
