Strengths as well as weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- Their magnetic field remains stable, and after approximately 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (according to research),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- By covering with a smooth coating of nickel, the element gains an professional look,
- Magnets exhibit excellent magnetic induction on the active area,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their shape) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- In view of the ability of free forming and adaptation to custom requirements, neodymium magnets can be created in a broad palette of geometric configurations, which increases their versatility,
- Universal use in innovative solutions – they are used in computer drives, electric drive systems, diagnostic systems, also other advanced devices.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we recommend using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- NdFeB magnets lose strength when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic holder.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child safety. Additionally, small elements of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of special test steel, guaranteeing full magnetic saturation
- with a cross-section minimum 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- in stable room temperature
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Plate thickness – too thin steel does not accept the full field, causing part of the power to be wasted into the air.
- Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Cast iron may attract less.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
- Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Holding force was checked on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, however under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Electronic hazard
Equipment safety: Strong magnets can damage data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Machining danger
Mechanical processing of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
ICD Warning
Health Alert: Strong magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Sensitization to coating
Medical facts indicate that nickel (the usual finish) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands or select encased magnets.
Powerful field
Before starting, read the rules. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Power loss in heat
Watch the temperature. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will destroy its properties and strength.
Choking Hazard
Absolutely store magnets out of reach of children. Risk of swallowing is high, and the consequences of magnets connecting inside the body are very dangerous.
Impact on smartphones
GPS units and mobile phones are highly susceptible to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can ruin the internal compass in your phone.
Shattering risk
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Do not hit, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Serious injuries
Protect your hands. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of massive weight, crushing anything in their path. Be careful!
