Other offers
Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They have constant strength, and over nearly 10 years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- By using a reflective layer of gold, the element has an proper look,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a unique magnetic field – this is a key feature,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of precise shaping and optimizing to defined requirements,
- Wide application in electronics industry – they are commonly used in data components, motor assemblies, medical equipment, and other advanced devices.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Cons
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- Neodymium magnets lose force when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we suggest using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using casing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small elements of these devices can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what it depends on?
- with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- with a cross-section of at least 10 mm
- characterized by smoothness
- without the slightest clearance between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (rust, dirt, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the holding force drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Plate material – mild steel gives the best results. Alloy steels decrease magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which increases field saturation. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a polished steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Fire warning
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Finger safety
Protect your hands. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Allergy Warning
Certain individuals suffer from a sensitization to Ni, which is the typical protective layer for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact can result in dermatitis. We strongly advise use protective gloves.
Safe operation
Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Be predictive.
Implant safety
Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Keep away from electronics
Be aware: neodymium magnets generate a field that disrupts sensitive sensors. Keep a separation from your phone, device, and navigation systems.
Electronic devices
Data protection: Neodymium magnets can ruin payment cards and sensitive devices (pacemakers, medical aids, mechanical watches).
Fragile material
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Keep away from children
Product intended for adults. Small elements pose a choking risk, leading to serious injuries. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Operating temperature
Do not overheat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, ask us about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
